The first half of the day is spend on grief support- dealing with the grieving; reactions to expect and how to handle them; children and grief; survivor frequently asked questions; survivor viewing of the body; and the logistics of death- death certificates, autopsy and organ donation issues, and body disposition.
The second half of the day is spent on death notifications and “special operations.” Death notification training includes instruction on telephone notifications, special considerations for those with visual or hearing impairments, language barriers, and cultural/religious factors surrounding death and dying. The special operations section discusses differences for survivors and responders as regarding pediatric deaths, hospice and DNR issues, dying patients, homicides, and suicides, as well as a crime-scene refresher and dealing with media presence.

Sarah Mielke, the creator of the Emotional Trauma Life Support™ program, has been a firefighter and EMT since 2005 and a paramedic since 2011. In 2014 she began pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in paramedicine at Central Washington University and while there, developed the ETLS™ program, graduating in 2016 with a Bachelor of Science in paramedicine and a Bachelor of Arts in psychology.
General Comments: After dealing with long-term complex PTSD for 17 years and lived through an extended periods of herself being actively suicidal, as well as having been on both sides of providing death notifications and grief support, her passion is to educate on the how and why of emotional trauma and to try to save others from having to struggle through the battles alone and unaided. Having lived through it, survived, and slowly rebuilt her life, she is now an educator and researcher who is well aware of how significantly these issues can impact providers. She lives in northwestern Washington State, where she finds her therapy in the outdoors – hiking, camping, and sailing whenever she can.
